6 Tips to Make Your Study Aboard A Success: Before You Take Off
/It’s my fifth day abroad and I’ve already had a few ups and downs. I most definitely don’t regret my decision and am still in shock that I am here. I hope that all of you decide to go abroad at some point, as I believe it can be an extraordinary experience. I plan to share many of my experiences while abroad with you all, but there are a few things you should know before you touch down in your new home. Here are six tips that will make your experience better before you even leave:
1. Only Pack Necessities
Make sure you research what the climate is of your study abroad destination. I am studying abroad in a cold climate, so my suitcase was filled with sweaters and coats. Even though I had other cute tops, I knew they would not get worn until maybe the end of the semester. Also, keep in mind that if you get a chance to journey home, you can switch some clothes out. When it comes to bedding and bigger decorating items, wait until you get there. It will save you a lot of space and give you a good opportunity to make your space unique to your new home.
2. Research Grocery, Decorating, Etc Stores Before You Land
I cannot stress this enough. My first night here I was famished because I had no idea where to get food. I went to bed with a grumpy tummy. Avoid my mistake and use all that time in the airport to figure out where the grocery store is and a few cheap restaurants. It will save you so much trouble, especially if you want to save on data usage.
3. Get All medications you think you might need
Another situation I am dealing with while abroad is medical care. PLEASE research this before you arrive. Call your school and ask if they have insurance for international students. My school for example requires that all students use their international student insurance. A lot of exchange students didn’t know this and purchased insurance on their own. They were upset when they realized they paid double the money. Also, have a check-up with your normal doctor before you leave and discuss all your previously held conditions. I have found that you have to jump through so many hoops to get seen at a clinic while abroad, so just get it done before.
4. Figure out Phone Plans
Some people recommend SIM cards or international phone plans. It’s totally up to you. I think it depends on the length of your stay. If you are going to be there for a long time, I recommend looking into getting a number in that country. My study abroad isn’t long, so I am using an international phone plan and LOTS of WiFi (lol). I might change this as I get further along, but for now it’s working pretty well.
5. Know You’re Actual Start Date
So, this one might seem ridiculous, but it’s not I promise! My university’s schedule stated that the first day of school was the 6th, but when I went to look where my classes were online, I was told I didn’t start until the 13th! At my school, your class start date varies. There’s not one set start date, so look into it.
6. Finances and Food
I am probably going to make a whole post about finances when studying abroad, but for now I want to focus on what you might not realize is going to be costly. At my home institution, we have meal plans that give you a few swipes at the cafeteria a week. At my study abroad institution, there is no such thing, so now I have to cook in the communal kitchens and/or order out. This is important information to know when planning for your study abroad. I never thought my biggest expense would be food, but here we are.
These are just the tip of the iceberg, so if you have any study abroad questions, send them in the comments section and I will respond with the best of my knowledge!
