You will always be my baby

First, I just want to thank Queen Mariah for creating such a bop. Second, I want to RAVE about this film. Netflix did it again. “Always Be My Maybe” is such a delightful, summer flick. The film tells the story of a pair of childhood friends, who meet again after a 15 year hiatus. Sasha, played by comedian Ali Wong, is a world-renowned chef, while Marcus, played by Fresh Off the Boat star, Randall Park, works for his father’s air-conditioning business. Both of them are in relationships when they meet, but they are forced to reevaluate their relationships and careers when they see each other again.

The film is so real and funny. It tackles many important topics including, sexism. There is one moment in particular when Marcus questions if he wants to “just be the guy that holds the woman’s purse”, with Sasha asking if he would feel differently if their roles were reversed. I loved how the film made a statement about how a woman’s success shouldn’t be seen as an impediment to her significant other’s career, nor should she have to take a backseat so that he can figure out his passions. Girl power!

The diversity of the cast was just amazing! I was so excited to see Asian leads. I think Netflix is doing an amazing job at pushing for films with minority leads. They are starting to recognize that it is important for viewers to be able to see themselves in the characters.

Overall, I loved this film. I watched it with my mom and we both laughed and cried throughout the film. If you’re looking for a sweet, modern love story— look no further. And don’t even get me started on Sasha’s outfits throughout the film—gorgeous.

What I loved most was that the film highlighted a beautiful friendship and reminded me that sometimes the only person who will keep it real with you is your best friend.

P.S. Another epic reason to watch: Keanu Reeves. I won’t spoil that one. Just watch.
