Living an “I Don’t Know Who Needs to Hear This” Lifestyle
We’ve all seen the “I don’t know who needs to hear this” tweets. They range from messages of encouragement to advisement on whether or not to eat a sandwich. All equally hilarious, especially when they hit close to home. Something that I think always intrigued me about them was their thoughtfulness and slight spiritual undertones. It is completely spiritual to send out a piece of advice without knowing the recipient. It requires trust and the belief that someone else (God) gave you the words to say. Every time I read one, first, I laugh, but then excitement builds in my stomach when I think that maybe someone ACTUALLY needed to hear it. Don’t get me wrong, I totally believe that the best way to hear God’s word is in the Bible. The Bible was given to us as a gift with God’s living word recorded for us to use every day. But I have to admit that nothing reminds me of God’s power more than when He calls out to me through a book or a movie. It reminds me just how much He loves me that He meets me where I am.
There’s this song, Reckless Love by Cory Asbury, which describes the love of God as overwhelming. Overwhelming. The MacMillian Dictionary defines overwhelming as “much larger, stronger, more important, etc. than anything else in a situation”. Hold onto “more important than anything else in a situation”. We’ll come back to that. The Bible says that we are called to be missionaries (Matthew 28:19) in our own shape or form, but how often do we ignore that still small voice whispering in the depths of our hearts. I know I do ALL THE TIME. I can’t count how many times I’ve ignored the Holy Spirit when it told me to place a five-dollar bill in a homeless man’s cup. Or the times I felt and brushed off God tugging on my sleeve to tell my hurting friend how much He loved them out of fear of pushback. The fact is God has asked me so many times to lean on Him and to allow myself to be used, but every time I told myself that I was too busy to stop and give the man money or that it wasn’t the right time to tell my friend about God’s reckless love for them. I always found excuses.
Let’s go back to “more important than anything else in a situation”. God’s love for us is so extraordinary and OVERWHELMING that it’s more important than anything else in a situation. It’s bigger than our insecurities, our worries, and much stronger than the words people say about us.
Tweeting an “I don’t know who needs to hear this” tweet is the perfect example of how we are supposed to live our lives. Its tone has an urgency about it. When you live with the recognition that God truly loves you, it overwhelms to the point of urgency. You can’t help but want to share the Good News. You seek to please God at every turn, including the uncomfortable things He asks you to do as soon as possible. Live with the mentality that you are a vessel for God to use and that when He asks you to do something, it’s not a joke or something to be delayed until your earliest convenience. In fact, it’s not about you at all. God will require you to do things that you will never see the fruits of. I have no idea what that homeless man was going to use that five dollars for or how telling my friend about God would have changed their life, but I do know those were opportunities to serve God. I still walk past situations in which the Holy Spirit has asked me to act. It’s hard to step out on faith but know that God prepares you for every situation He allows you to go through. Maybe God wants to meet someone through you. Will you allow yourself to be used?
Dear Lord,
I don’t know who needed to hear this, but I pray you give them the strength to serve you when you ask and the ability to recognize Your voice. Help them to experience your overwhelming love and to share it with others even when they won’t see the end result. Help them to trust You enough to send shots out in the dark.
Love You Father,
Dominique
